New Directions International Alumni

September 06, 2012

This July, Damascus Road (Joel and Sonia Leath, John and Jane Fraser, and Marie Alston) had the privilege of leading worship at Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC.   New Directions Alumni, David and Cathy Horner, serve in leadership at Providence with David as Senior Pastor and Cathy as Women’s Ministry Advisor and Bible Study Teacher.

It was  a wonderful morning of worship, and a great time of reunion and fellowship with old friends.  We hope you enjoy the following pictures from our time at Providence.

Name: Leah Sipelile Smith
School: Hood Theological Seminary, Salisbury NC
Degree Earned: Master of Divinity (cum laude)
New position: Chaplain Resident ~
ARMC (April 30, 2012 - August 30, 2013)

On May 12, 2012 I graduated from Hood Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree.  I started seminary in the fall of 2008.  Attending school full-time while working full-time was both a challenge and an adventure!  Every Friday I would pack up my car and drive to Salisbury.  The first year, I was crazy enough to drive down Friday night, attend classes and drive back to spend the night at home. The next day, I would leave at 7 am to be back in Salisbury for classes starting at 8 am!  As much as I loved the drive between Burlington and Salisbury, I soon realized the only way I was going to survive was by spending Friday nights in Salisbury.  So, for the first time in many years, I moved into a dorm!

Why are you attending seminary at the age of 50 someone asked me?  My journey to seminary really started on Good Friday in 1972 when my life was changed forever.  While attending a Scripture Union Easter camp, I was confronted with the message of the Gospel for the very first time.  I praise God for opening my eyes so I could see my need for a Savior.  After I got saved, I became very passionate about sharing my faith:  starting with my best friend, classmates, and family.  I did not know much, so I just shared with them what I had experienced.

Dan Apple and Patt J.L. and I had the joy of being in Charlotte to be part of a surprise 60th birthday party for an original New Directions alumnus, Dan Apple.  He was TOTALLY surprised!! His wife, Judy, also pictured, did a wonderful job of keeping it a secret. (She wondered if God would forgive her for telling so many lies to get Dan to the venue!)  It was our first time to see her since her recovery from breast cancer surgery—a wonderful survivor story—and we had a joyful evening of reminiscing and enjoying each other’s company.  That’s when we got the call that Charlie was being flown by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center for emergency heart surgery.  We left the party early and headed over to the hospital in time to meet up with Judy and pray with Charlie.  Interesting, isn’t it, that we just “happened” to be in Charlotte and Charlie just “happened” to be flown there AND the best doctor for aortic repair surgery just “happened” to be on call?!  I tell you, God’s timing is always perfect!

I hope you enjoy the pictures below.

In His Love,
