Dessert in the Desert?

Having looked at my last entry under Patt’s Perspective, which was a long time ago, I see that I was just getting the victory over “The Pod”.  I can still see it in my mind’s eye and remember clearly the longing for orderliness that made the Pod a temporary necessity.  Thank goodness that is over, though there have been many more battles and victories on other fronts.  Through them all, I noticed a disturbing trend of choosing a less than spiritual approach for coping while the battles raged.

There have been frustrating battles with computer programs and internet problems that don’t work or we don’t understand how to make them work.  We have our on-going sadness with the estrangement from our oldest daughter, Trish, and her family.  There’s continual emotional struggle with having to be separated from each other: J.L. and the ministry overseas and me staying here to manage the household.  As I recently complained to one friend, “J.L. is currently in Singapore teaching at a strategic pastors’ conference, and I am currently with our car in Burlington having the oil changed and the tires rotated.”  Both are necessary; it’s just that one sounds a whole lot more spiritual than the other.

HAITI – May, 2011

PATT’S PERSPECTIVE

“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.”

(Rom. 13:1)

It was about the length of a football field and half as wide.  I don’t know what I expected, but the sight of the mass grave dotted with small black wooden crosses left me with nothing to say.  It was so sad.  When we visited “Saint Christopher” on this past trip to Haiti, J.L. and I were told that trucks would deposit their load of dead bodies and bulldozers would cover them with dirt so the next layer could be added.  What else could they do with over 200,000 to bury in such a short time?

Not far away from that was the huge treeless hillside dotted with small 10’ x 10’ structures (“homes”), covered in blue or white plastic tarps, and surrounded with sticks for the boundary markers.  500,000 people in a relocation site outside of Port-au-Prince.  The government offered free land to the 3 million displaced citizens, and many took advantage of it.  They swapped living in a crowded “tent city” to living in a “slum city” on a barren hillside.

About the Pod

Now, once again, about the Pod.  Most likely you had already picked up on the fact that the Pod really got to me – stressed me out – even though I knew in my tiny brain that it was just an inanimate object with no hidden agenda for making my life miserable.  Even though I knew I should be grateful for how God was providing for our needs rather than be concerned about the temporary disorganization around me.  I showed you pictures of the mess in our backyard, the Pod and the boxes, right?  Well, the Pod is gone with all the rest of the clutter that was in the pictures, and NOW I’m content and happier.  Add J.L.’s valiant efforts and untiring work to that, and the formerly chaotic yard has been transformed into a thing of beauty.  A place for everything and everything in its place…almost.  So, if you heard something that sounded vaguely like the Hallelujah Chorus wafting in the summer air during the last 10 days or so, know for sure that it was coming from West Davis Street in Burlington.

From the Pod - Part Deux

Patt from the pod 2

Hello Family and Friends,

This is part deux of news from the pod and week 6 of perseverance, frustration, determination and depression.  Praise God the ditch witch is gone and the construction dumpster left last week, filled to capacity twice.  As you can see from the first picture, we are making some progress, slowly but surely.  My problem today is that I want it to be QUICKLY, not slowly.  I’ve had it with the slowly part.  How I envy Paul when he wrote that he had learned the secret of being contentment whatever the circumstances. (Philippians 4:11)  Why can’t I be more like him and just take all of this in stride and do all things for the Lord’s honor and glory?  After all, it’s only a temporary state of chaos and disorder and is not going to last forever. (Someone promise me this is only temporary.)

Patt from the “pod”

Dear Friends,

This is to let you know that I will be writing my thoughts and experiences on a somewhat regular basis for J.L.‘s website and put to pen, as it were, my perspective on this season in life.

April and May—and now June—were more months of transition for J.L. and me.  The New Directions building was going to be sold (it has been as of this writing) and we needed to move all of our things.  It has been interesting to remember the look of the pre-move offices and the items in them, and quite another to see them boxed up.  Goodness, where did all this stuff come from?  Have J.L. and I not spoken, numerous times for numerous conferences overseas, on “this world is not my home home, I’m just a travelin’ through,” or written that we are to hold loosely to material possessions or prayed that we would find all of our sufficiency in Christ and not in things?  If you could see our backyard with so many of those things under tarps, a Pod for storage outside the back door, the pictures and artifacts that have invaded most rooms in our house, you would have to conclude that we need to revisit our preaching and walk the talk!  Seriously, our property looks like a TV episode from Sanford and Sons!
