Update from Haiti: A Small World

J.L.'s hotel accommodations on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic
J.L.‘s hotel accommodations on the border of Haiti & the Dominican Republic

J.L. flew into Santo Domingo on Wednesday (27th) and made the difficult trip from the airport to the border with Haiti—difficult because of intense traffic going in that direction, bartering and haggling with the taxi driver over his greatly inflated prices, finding a place to stay for the night, meals, etc.  The border closed at sundown, and the town, which looks like something from an old wild west movie, does not have hotels.  J.L. was laughed at whenever he asked, “Is there a hotel here?  Where can I find a place to sleep?”  The next morning, he texted me, “This is a little on the edge, but I love it!”  While looking for a cup of coffee at the local hospital (!), he ran into Don and Todd Mundy, good friends of ours from Burlington.  Don is a retired anesthesiologist and his son is a PA in orthopedics.  They were just coming off the night shift.  What a small world!

Haiti: ACT OF GOD OR ACT OF NATURE?

“Watch out that no one deceives you…Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  All these are but the beginning of birth pains.”  - (Matt. 24:4-8)

Dear Friends & Partners,

When you open and receive this email, I will either be in Haiti or in route there.  I arrived home from India late Saturday night and have made a quick turn-around for Port-au-Prince via the Dominican Republic.  This first trip will either be a brief recon trip of several days – or I will stay there for an indefinite period of time as circumstances demand.  Since no one can anticipate in advance how these kinds of relief trips will play out, you must be flexible and respond as the Spirit leads and the circumstances demand and take a “new direction” at a moment’s notice.  That’s how you can have an “impact of hope” on people through the love of the Lord Jesus.

ACT OF GOD OR ACT OF NATURE?

But before going, I wanted to share a few thoughts about the origin and nature of this horrific mega-disaster of epic proportion.  On my series of long flights back from India, I was able to read a few newspapers and magazines articles about this 7.3 earthquake – the worst to date in the Western Hemisphere.  I read articles by President Obama, former President Bill Clinton and a number of newspaper editors and reporters.  I also saw a number of references to what Pat Robertson said about this being in some way the “judgment of God” as a result of Haiti’s voodoo pact with the devil in 1804.  As many of you know, I was deeply involved in Haiti’s Bicentennial in 2004 with my friend and partner – and presidential candidate – Dr. Chavannes Jeune.  This was also in partnership with noted Promise Keeper speaker, Joe White.  We called these events: “Haiti At The Cross.”  It was a historic time of prayer, fasting, preaching and teaching to “break the blood pact with the devil” through voodoo and ratify the “blood covenant of Christ on the cross” for Haiti.  We believe that God wonderfully honored the faith of the Haitian church – one of the fastest growing in the world with between 45% - 50% of Haiti professing to be evangelical Christians!  So why did God cause or permit this horrific earthquake and the on-going after-shocks?

Report From Haiti - Ambassador Lewis Lucke

Dear friends and family:

Ambassador Lewis LuckeI do have not time to write, so this will be rushed. First thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Haiti has suffered a tragedy of Biblical proportions with over 100,000 dead and many, many injured. Whole sections of town that were marginal anyway, are largely flattened.  People are coming out of the initial shock but are still grieving. I love this poor place and the people and it breaks your heart.

I am in charge of the US relief and recovery effort.  USAID is the lead agency with all other USG agencie working with our lead and thru the coordination we provide. We have a trained disaster response team from USAID that coordinates initial responses on food, water, health, shelter and logistics. We link with all the other players like the US, EU and NGOs that we depend on. The key link in this is the US military who have the assets to help us with security for distribution sites (along with UN) and a million other tasks and issues we confront every day. I have a helicopter at my disposition and depend on it.

Weep With Those Who Weep - Chennai Report

Chennai Hope Festival

“Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” (Rom. 12:15)

Dear Friends & Partners,

Right now those words of admonition from Paul to the saints at Rome are especially relevant for me.  As I write this final quick “field report,” I have just returned from the opening night of the Franklin Graham “Chennai Hope Festival.” There were between 20,000 - 25,000 people present with hundreds making decisions for Christ at the invitation.  With this strong of a beginning on the first night—which is a work day and night in CheNnai, the crowds will no doubt swell to over 50,000 by the weekend with thousands more making decisions for Christ.

THE HAITIAN TSUNAMI

Dear Friend & Partner,

I am writing you this urgent email from Chennai, India, where I just arrived today from a couple of weeks of travel and ministry in Nepal and India.  By now you are all totally aware of the devastating earthquake that has virtually destroyed the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.  Because of your daily access to the news, many of you know far more about this cataclysmic event than I do.  To date I have not seen TV and only a few pictures Since I had been traveling and ministering in remote areas of North East India, I had no access to news.  I only heard of it when I made a brief call to Patt to check in on her.  I was shaken to the bone with the news she shared briefly about Haiti—especially since I was just there a few weeks ago prior to this trip to Asia!  But from what I have been able to read, they are already saying this will be the single biggest natural disaster that the United Nations has ever faced.  Certainly it is the biggest natural disaster in the Western Hemisphere in the poorest country—right on our doorstep as a nation!

Partner Update: I have learned the lesson from the earthquake

Here is an account of the earthquake as told by Marie Lucie Jeune.

“The Lord reigneth, let the people tremble” Psalm 99:4

Since Friday morning I have been thinking about the earthquake and I have learned three major lessons that I would like to share with you.  I have shared it with my family and coworkers but I would like to share them also with you who have been praying for me, my family and my dear country.

  1. God is sovereign.

There is no question about God’s sovereignty.  We all know it but this earthquake is a real proof for me.  Chavannes had a meeting with the staff at Universite Lumiere on Monday the 11th that lasted until after 6PM.  If the meeting had taken place on the 12th Chavannes and all the staff members would have been dead.  Now they have only two people from the personnel who have moved to heaven:  Pastor Desplumes, a Radio Lumiere employee who was teaching and another doctor who was teaching also.  Around 30 students died from the approximately 900 registered.  The earthquake did not take place in the morning when many students are in school, many people at work but at 4:53 when most kids are at home, when employees and employers are either at home or close to home.  God in his love knew the exact time to send the eartquake.
